Grand Champion - Traditional Forms / Weapons

General Rules:

  • Eligibility: Only 1st place winners from individual divisions in traditional forms and Weapons are eligible to compete for the Grand Championship.
  • Separate Grand Championships: There will be two separate Grand Championships—one for colored belts and one for black belts.
  • Uniform: Competitors must wear appropriate traditional uniforms for their style, with belt rank clearly visible.

Competition Format:

  • Single-Elimination Bracket:  Competitors face each other in head-to-head, single-elimination rounds.  Each round eliminates one competitor, with the winner advancing until one Grand Champion remains.
  • Simultaneous Performance:  Competitors perform their traditional forms side-by-side, allowing for direct comparison.  Judges observe both performances to decide which competitor advances.

Judging Criteria:

Judges will vote based on these performance aspects:

  • Technique and Precision: Execution of stances, strikes, blocks, and movements with proper form and accuracy.
  • Power and Control: Display of controlled energy and effective use of strength without sacrificing technique.
  • Focus and Spirit: Competitor’s mental focus, intensity, and adherence to martial arts principles.
  • Timing and Flow: Smooth transitions, consistent rhythm, and flow throughout the form.
  • Overall Presentation**: Confidence, composure, and display of martial arts values.

Judges will holistically evaluate each aspect, choosing the competitor who best demonstrates these qualities as the winner of each head-to-head matchup.

Round Details:

  • Time Limits: Competitors have up to 2 minutes to complete their form.  A 10-second preparation period is allowed for bowing and stance setup.
  • Verbal Start Cue:  A judge will verbally announce “Begin” for both competitors to start simultaneously.
  • Post-Performance Protocol: Upon completion, competitors bow to each other and the judges.

Judging Process:

  • Immediate Decision: After both competitors finish, each judge selects their winner independently, raising a hand to indicate their choice.
  • Majority Vote: The competitor with the majority of votes advances to the next round.
  • Tie-Breaker: In case of a tie, a designated head judge casts the deciding vote.

Code of Conduct:

  • Respect: Competitors must show respect to judges, opponents, and officials at all times.
  • Sportsmanship: Disruptive behavior will result in immediate disqualification.
  • Judges’ Decisions Are Final: All voting decisions are final, and any disputes must be handled through tournament officials with respect.
